SPANISH FRIDAY: ¿Un Perrito, Dos Perritos, Cuál Es La Diferencia?

Amigos Inseparables -- mijo estaba enfermo cuándo tomé esta foto.

Learn more about Spanish Friday!

¡Tengo muy buenas noticias que compartirles!
Hemos decidido conseguirle un compañero a nuestro mascota, Albert.

I have great news to share with you! We've decided to get our dog, Albert, a companion.

❤

The thing is that it bums us out to leave the poor guy alone for so many hours during the day.

Soy gato.

❤

When we're not home, he spends his day sleeping on top of the couch, like a cat.
Doesn't he look sad?

❤

This eccentric dog has brought us so much happiness. Yes, at first he drove us crazy (and still does), but like any other member of the family, we accept him with all his defects and bad habits. Our new dog arrives sometime between June and July. His name will be "Einstein."

We'll see what adventures await us.

Mis Gallinas No Ponen Huevos

Mis gallinas, Samantha y Perla, todavía no ponen huevos.

Something strange happened when we returned from California. The following morning I woke up to an unfamiliar noise that sounded like PLOP--PLOP--PLOP. Being so tired, I didn't get up to investigate it. I figured that it was probably the dog's tail banging on one of the doors downstairs, besides, after several minutes the sound disappeared.

The PLOP--PLOP--PLOP continued for several days, at the same hour, until it finally started to drive me nuts. I thought, "What the devil is wrong with that dog?" Look at what I discovered when I got up to scold him.

Can somebody explain to me why this is happening?

SPANISH FRIDAY: ¡A La Escuela!

Consejo Canino ...

"No soy desentendido. ¡No oigo! Soy perro. Sabes -- Wow-wow."

Canine Advice ...

"I'm not disobedient. The thing is that I have way too much hair. I can't hear! Besides, why do you leave your things where you know that can I reach them.  Pay attention. Be a responsible owner. Don't get angry when I do what comes natural. I'm a dog. You know -- Bow-wow."

SPANISH FRIDAY: Payasos, Arañas y Ratas, Oh, My!

Arena de Maine | Maine sand :-)

ENGLISH:

¿Que piensan de estos imagenes?

------------------------------------

ESPAÑOL :-) :

Friends, its been a while since I've written anything in Spanish. I fell out of my routine when Mom moved to California in December, leaving me without anybody to practice. I need to get back into it!

I've spent the last couple of weeks "unplugged." Truthfully, after the week I had at school with the stress leading up to my presentation (that I survived :) and the Bootcamp at work, it was a though my brain melted. Finally feeling normal, again.

Okay ... so the purpose of this post ...

There's an amusement park near where we're staying that gives me a serious case of the heebie-jeebies. Every time we go there I feel as though I'm in a Stephen King Novel. :p

What do you think of these images?

Handsome, no?

SPANISH FRIDAY: El Perrito Habla

Albert el perrito Labradoodle | Albert the Labradoodle Puppy
Aqui, tiene 11 semanas de edad. | He's 11 weeks old, here.

Hola!

Soy perrito y todavía no me puedo controlar.

Albert

***

Hi! *lifts paw*

I know you haven't heard much about me lately. I believe my owner is speechless due to all the mischief I've caused. I'm a little embarrassed to admit all that has happened due to my curiosity, but this family finally understands that they can't lower their guard when I'm outside my crate. I'm a puppy and still can't control myself.

I'm happy to report that the little boy hasn't had any problems with his allergies, so that means I stay! Makes for an extremely happy dog. They feed me and give me lots of love, even taking me outside at 2 and 3 o'clock in the morning. What do I like the most? The five baths I've taken in the kitchen sink the last week. Hahaha ... guess you could say I'm a very clean dog.

Gotta go, now. The shoes, socks and toilet paper are calling.

Until next time.

Casi Llega Nuestro Perrito, Albert

Labradoodle puppies at 5 weeks
Haciendo fila!
Waiting in line.

HOW TO RAISE THE PERFECT DOG by Cesar Millan
Necessito comenzar leer este libro
I need to start reading this book.

Puppy Supplies
We're running around here as if we're getting ready to give birth ... to a four-legged baby covered with fur (well, actually, hair).

I haven't shared with you that we decided to buy our son a dog. Within a week, the dog known as "Albert," a Poodle-Labrador Retriever mix, arrives home. Our son is filled with anticipation and is counting the days on the calendar ... his dad and I? We're praying the hypoallergenic dog will be an addition to our family.

Since our son doesn't have any siblings, he needs a friend, a companion. He been asking for a dog for a while, "knowing" that he's allergic to them. He doesn't care -- he loves them. So much so, that his bed is inundated with stuffed dogs, all colors and sizes. He even has one that breathes and is  battery-operated that my mother gave him before leaving for California.

Our situation is a little complicated. I don't know if I've shared with you, but our son has several food (eggs, milk, nuts, soy, beef ... ) and environmental (pollen, mold ... ) allergies, in addition to asthma. We had to go as far as to find food for the dog that wouldn't harm our son in the event the dog licked him. Talk about nerves! In spite of all this, we have faith. A little voice is telling me everything with turn out fine.

Adventures to follow. : )

(I apologize for my irregular blogging the last few weeks, but I've been a little stressed-out with school. Finding peace in reading. I hope to return to a more regular schedule, soon. Miss you.)

---

It gives me pleasure to share a song with you that always makes me happy. I know it has to do with love, but not for me. Rather, I think of how much we change, during our lives in this world. Don't know why, but I feel like dancing, today. Will you dance with me?

Have a great weekend, my friends. <3

Do you have a favorite dessert? Something so sweet that simply thinking about it makes your mouth water? For me, that dessert has always been flan.

La Lechera
Leche Condensada y Dulce De Leche
NO WAY.

My Colombian godmother used to always make one for me -- moist and smothered in honey -- for my birthday. My memories are similarly sticky, because, now, it's my dessert of choice whenever dining-out. But as much as I love flan, I'd never attempted making one ... NO WAY. How? With what ingredients? And what if it didn't come out right?  It had to be complicated.

I probably would've never tried it, if not for a promotional package I received (thanks to my friend Ruby) from Nestlé, promoting their new La Lechera products: Dulce de Leche y Leche Condensada.

(You can see Ruby's Choco-flan, here. : )

So I went to Nestlé's website and picked a recipe to make a Coconut Flan for my husband's birthday (he turned 46, yesterday!) I'm so happy because not only did the flan come out well, but also, because he really enjoyed it ... if only he'd savored it a little more. The man is like a shark. He ate one in less than five bites!

Did You Know?

  • That flan originated with the ancient Romans? Not only did they prepare a sweet flan with honey and pepper, but also a savory version with EEL! << Yum?
  • That during the Middle Ages, the most popular flan ingredients included cinnamon, sugar, spinach, almonds and FISH?
  • You can read more here (in English).

SPANISH FRIDAY: ¿Quién No Patinaba? Who Didn't Skate?

Una pelicula de patinaje que me encantó ...

Mijito ... <3

Recently our son was invited to a birthday party at a roller skating rink. It was his first time on skates and he loved it (even though I told him he had to wear his helmet). At first, he wobbled, as if he learned to walk, but soon, he didn't want to hold on to his father and skated solo. He declared his independence.

Before arriving at the rink, I'd decided that I wasn't even going to attempt putting on skates. Was I crazy? I never liked roller blades and it had been more than thirty years since I'd been on roller skates. Geesh ... thirty. I was certain I'd kill myself.

And then something happened. At watching my son skate under the flashing lights with Top 40 Music playing in the background, my head flooded with memories of when my sisters and I used to go to a rink in Orange, CA called Holiday Skate Rink, where girls wore Chemin de Fers and tube tops and applied strawberry or bubble-gum lipgloss to their lips. In those days, my parents would drop us off in the morning and pick us up in the afternoon.

In the summertime, when we weren't at the skating rink, my sisters and I spent our days skating on the sidewalk in front of our house and around my parents' business. We lived in our skates. Always with a radio nearby. We didn't want for anything. We had each other, our skates and music.

SPANISH FRIDAY: Canciones Inolvidables | Unforgettable Songs

---------------------------------------------

I've been like a crazy woman the last week. My husband was traveling the same time I started school. I thought was going to lose my marbles. *deep breath* (I have to tell you that I love the program I chose, the teachers, and learning from the other students. I'm not nervous anymore!)

With all the talk on the web the last week about Mexican Independence Day, I got the urge to listen to some songs that brought back a lot of memories. Paloma Negra (Lola Beltran) y Cucurrucucu Paloma (Pedro Infante) are two of them.

Looking for them, I found some songs by Lila Downs. When I heard and saw her sing Paloma Negra-Black Dove, my soul split in two.

I share her with you. : )

Lyrics to Black Dove
I'm tired of weeping and yet there's no sign of the sun
I no longer know whether to curse you or pray for you
I'm afraid to look for you and afraid to find you
Where my friends have told me that you've gone
At times I feel like relinquishing the fight
And ripping out the claws that cause my pain
But my eyes are dying without looking into yours
And my affection returns to wait for you at dawn
And you decided on your own to find a party
Black dove, black dove where are you?
Stop playing with my honour, party boy
Your caresses must be mine, and no one else's
And though I love you madly, don't come back to me
Black dove, you're the bars on this cage of suffering
I want to be free and live my life with whom I choose
Lord, give me strength for I'm dying
to go find him
And you decided on your own to find a party

Lo Que Pasa | What's Happening

------

First a confession. I wanted to wait until I was 100% sure, but I think being 99% sure is enough. I can't wait anymore! If all goes well, I start my M.Ed. on September 20th.

I spent a few sleepless nights torn between two career tracts: guidance counseling or English as a Second Language (ESL). Finally, I chose guidance counseling because I feel that that my experience and temperament would serve me well in being able to help students explore career options.

More to come.

El Huracán Que No Fue -- The Hurricane That Wasn't

Fortunately, the worst thing to happen in my town when Irene came was that a few trees and electrical lines got knocked down. We're lucky that my neighborhood's lines run underground. Other neighbors weren't so lucky and are still without electricity.

The wind knocked down two trees in our yard.

Oranizando -- Organizing

I'm one of those moms who saves everything her child makes at school. Everything. We took advantage of some of the time spent inside and took down all my son's artwork from the walls. Now we're ready for the second grade. : )

Arte del primer grado.
First-grade art.

Cookie, el hamster enojado.
Cookie, the angry hamster.

------

Our bionic hamster escaped. Well, that's not totally true ... mom forgot to lock the cage and the little furry guy did what any caged animal would do -- he fled. He was free for twenty-four hours. (Thanks Tracey for the tips!)

Finally my husband saw him from the corner of his eye while changing his clothes (my husband, not the hamster). Poor Cookie was in my bedroom fighting with the dust-bunnies. He wasn't too happy to go back to his little house.

Now look at him. Is it my imagination or is he giving the evil-eye?

SPANISH FRIDAY: Un Sorteo de Libro, Leemos en Espanol! | A Book Giveaway, Let's Read in Spanish!

Who wants to read the book ESPERANZA RISING by Pam Muñoz Ryan with me? The truth is that I've never read a book in Spanish. We all know that to improve our comprehension and vocabulary, in any language, we have to practice as much as possible.

I chose this book, not only because I think it's easy to read, (hello -- it's for children!), but also because it's about a universal theme: what a person will do to survive when they have to seek out opportunities outside their own country.

Quote From Barnes & Noble (My Translation):
"Esperanza Ortega has all the treasure that a young girl could wish for: beautiful dresses, a lovely house filled with servants in Aguacalientes, Mexico, and the promise that one day she'll oversee Roses Ranch like her mother. But an unforeseen tragedy destroys that dream, forcing Esperanza and her mother to escape to California where they will have to work at a country residence alongside other Mexicans. There, Esperanza will have to forget about her past and face her life's new realities: hard work, acceptance and financial difficulties. Esperanza will discover that true wealth resides within family and community. Pam Munoz Ryan presents us with an eloquent picture of the life of Mexicans in California in this passionate novel that gives voice to those whose own have been historically ignored/denied.

Playa Tunes

He comido tanta langosta, nieve y chocolate que mas no puedo comer.

We're still on vacation. : ) How I'd love to stay on the beach another week, but like always, we must return to reality. We've spent a fun-filled week near the ocean, visiting the carnival and friends ... and eating. I've eaten so much lobster, ice cream and chocolate that I can't eat anymore. I'm going to need a "body-cleanse" when I get back!

It looks like life is going to change for me a little when I return. I'm a bit nervous and fear change, but also believe that everything happens for a reason. SPANISH SAYING: "There is no bad through which good doesn't come." God has his plans for me. As always, I feel fortunate to have the love and support of my husband.

More to come.

I wanted to share some music I've enjoyed this week. It's almost all in Spanish, so appropriate for Spanish Friday. : D
